DOCUMENT NOTARIZATION FAQs

Here's some valuable information to help you understand the notarization process.

Types of Notarizations

There are a variety of notarizations and they all serve a different purpose. Often times, the documents you need notarized will list the specific notarization type needed. Below are a few commons types:
  • Acknowledgment (Individual Capacity)
  • Acknowledgment (Representative Capacity)
  • Verification Upon Oath or Affirmation
  • Witnessing or Attesting a Signature

Your notary is unable to tell you which option is best for you.

Identity Verification

Part of the notarization process requires that you present a valid ID issued by a state of federal government agency, that contains both a photograph and signature. In Illinois, these forms of ID include:
  • Driver’s License
  • State ID
  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Military ID

Valid means that the ID has not expired.

Remote Online Notarization

Some states allow remote notarization, meaning that the notary and client are not required to be physically in the same space. On March 9, 2020, Gov. JB Pritzker enacted the Executive Order 2020-14 which requires:
  • The notary and the customer are physically present in Illinois
  • Two-way, real time audio-video communication
  • The customer showing and initialing each page of the document

Angelyn began her service as a Notary Public in 2005. Since her commission, she has provided notary service to a variety of community members and organizations. She founded Sign Next to the X to provide efficient, ethical, and timely mobile notary support to Chicagoans.

In addition to being commissioned by the State of Illinois, Angelyn is also a member of the National Notary Association (NNA). She has successfully completed the training necessary to earn the designation of Certified Notary Signing Agent and has successfully passed the NNA Certified Background Check.

Angelyn has also earned certifications in:

  • Conflict Coaching (Peacemaker Ministries – Billings, Montana)
  • Mediation (Center for Conflict Resolution – Chicago, Illinois)
  • Paralegal Studies (Oakton Community College – Des Plaines, Illinois)
